Banding
After 1 week of spacers you are ready for braces. This visit is about 1-2 hours. Spacers are removed, bands sized and placed and brackets are bonded. Arch wires will usually be placed during this visit.
Adjustments
It usually takes 18-24 visits to complete an orthodontic case. "Mother Nature" or poor cooperation (missing appointments, broken bands or poor brushing) can lengthen treatment time. Patient cooperation is a must for smooth and timely treatment.
Cooperation
We need a reasonable cooperative effort from the patient and parents in wearing appliances and elastic, proper tooth brushing, and being prompt for all appointments. Lack of cooperation will hinder our efforts and will increase time in treatment.
Dental Care
All necessary fillings and fluoride treatments must be completed prior to treatment. The patient will be taught proper tooth brushing and appliance care but additional prevention requires that patients visit their family dentist at six-month intervals during orthodontic treatment.
Length Of Treatment
It is difficult to estimate the exact amount of time required to treat any given orthodontic case, as this depends upon variations in bone growth, personal habits, muscle changes and the cooperation of patients and parents. In giving an estimate for active treatment, it should be understood that certain factors might arise which would unavoidably necessitate a longer treatment period.
